SPACE SATELLITE CRASHES NEAR COUNTY LINE
Nancy Welke heard the crash around 8:45 this morning, just before she and her husband Dan were going to let the horses out. What they found on their E. Van Buren property, near the Gratiot/Saginaw County Line, is out of this world. Sort of.
What landed, still humming and whirring, was a piece of high-tech space gear supposedly launched into the stratosphere by Samsung.
This past week, Samsung Electronics unveiled the world’s first selfie sent to space, captured by actor, model and philanthropist Cara Delevingne and shown for the first time during a celebrity-filled event at the newly-opened Samsung KX experience space, a company press release said. The selfie is the first of many that Samsung will lift into the stratosphere this month as part of “SpaceSelfie” a mission to give everyone the chance to get their face in space.
It is unclear if the “SpaceSelfie” satellite, which landed on the Welkes property with a parachute, is that from the inaugural launch. A low-altitude balloon, suspected to be a part of the device, got caught up in nearby power lines on Barry Rd.
Samsung Representatives from the company are coming to pick up the equipment.
